How can we make a hula hoop automatically go up a straight vertical pole?
The problem sounds simple, people have been playing with hula hoops for many decades making them go up and down their bodies. However, when it is a straight vertic.

RE: Electric Hula Hoop

The great thing about lockdown is that people have plenty of time on their hands and come up with wacky, brilliant ideas such as this. Awesome.

RE: Electric Hula Hoop

What a great project, love the smoothness of the motion.

RE: Electric Hula Hoop

Very creative project and well-explained concepts!

It's interesting. As the hoop touches the side of the waist you pulse forward and then as it touches the opposite side you pulse back. I use a 2kg weighted hoop though which can give a bit of a sideways pull as it goes around though giving the illusion of sideways motion. I think this is probably why some people find it very hard to get started as they assume that it is more of a rotary motion than a linear one. You also need to get the timing of the pulses right with the position of the hoop in order to drive it sufficiently to keep it rotating.

To get the hoop to climb then introducing a sideways pulse tends to do the trick, however don't overdo is as getting smacked in the face with a weighted hoop isn't exactly much fun. [View:/resized-image/__size/16x16/__key/commentfiles/f7d226abd59f475c9d224a79e3f0ec07-f36fd65d-f9a0-4725-855a-f7c887d2c3ed/contentimage_5F00_4751.png:16:16]

Just need the LEDs now...

Amazing Hula Hoop Dancer Lisa Lottie Spins 6 Phoenix Hoops

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEnhhhWqnWQ

RE: Electric Hula Hoop

That's great Doug, however, I remember girls at school (never boys, it was 1960) hula hooping with circular cross section hoops.

They could start with it round their ankles and spin it up to waist level, but it certainly didn't use aerodynamics.

There's a not bad article about it here:

https://people.howstuffworks.com/hula-hoop.htm#pt1

I seem to recall a fake (possibly not malicious) anti gravity machine that worked on a similar principle:

The climbing thing went up a thin metal rod which was vibrated - I believe that the combination of rocking motion of the climber

and its friction against the rod resulted in a vertical force. The "inventor" hadn't worked this out.

Perhaps you should market yours as an "Amazing anti-gravity device", and keep quiet about how it really works.

Thanks for posting - nice start to the morning.

MK

RE: Electric Hula Hoop

Hi Doug,

Great project - original, very entertaining, educational, and overall well done.

Frank

RE: Electric Hula Hoop

Incredible video.
