Great idea. although some plants can cope with extremes of environment. I have one on my lounge windowsill (which gets direct sunlight) which seems OK with the high temperatures and extreme dryness. Everything else put on the windowsill just dies. I have no idea what the plant is, probably some desert thing. But it has flowers and everything. I tend to only water it very occasionally and feed it even less.

I also have some Amaryllis bulbs which my wife has as birthday presents. They go on the lounge window sill, last long enough to flower and then get crisped. I used to throw them away after that as I had heard they would not flower again, but recently I had been putting them into my new greenhouse (where the temperatures get hot enough to melt plastic! A bit of a surprise.) They all seem to love the extreme temperatures and virtually no water or feeding as they have all flowered again, some with better blooms than the original! My wife found one I seemed to have thrown away into an enclosed compost bin - to make room for the latest birthday present - and that was flowering in the dark. It was a bit distorted but I stuck it on the window sill - where it was immediately crisped by the heat. Still, it had a moment of glory.

I would modify your moisture sensors to work at less than 1.2 volts or go capacitive sensing.

If you put more than 1.25 between the electrodes you get electrolysis, with eats up the copper cladding and gives you erroneous data.

Nice background on your project. Nice to have a starting point that has proven the concept (even if it had it's own difficulties). I look forward to seeing where you go with this, as we have ~400 sf of garden beds and I have always wanted to have some sort of smart watering system (even though my wife still thinks that we don't need that, but maybe she could be convinced).
