Great stuff - I look forward to reading about your adventures.

I bought a MKR 1010 recently...it is so easy to setup. I added the new board support through the IDE's 'Board Manager' and selected the blinky example and was away. Some of the WiFi examples are really great - one reads WiFi channel strength and displays in the console.

Sorry, I got caught up in my Mouse Droid project and did not update this one. I do have a bit of an update since I have the IR sensors working and it can detect the edge of a table but it is a bit flaking. I'll try to get an update posted tonight or tomorrow night, although it is past the deadline.

I'm not 100% sure what happened.

I thought I'd done the edited version, but noticed it wasn't complete.

The code still needs some tidying to get it turning away from the wall correctly.

Hopefully this also resolves the corner issue as well.

The motorshield has an undervoltage detection, so you can't fire up the board to test the switches, without commenting out the fault check routine at Line 93.

The chips drive pin 12 to show a fault, which could be useful.

It's always interesting developing something, as each step brings new challenges.

What you have done is try to understand each stage, and while there are some unanswered questions, you've identified these for later.

I'm curious if the camera or the Laser determine where you should aim?

Getting the Pixy camera to provide stable results was a challenge as it seems to take at least four consecutive sets of readings taken in quick succession before the image data would stabilise.

This suggests that the camera needs more time than the laser to identify the target, which tends to make the Laser information important.

There is no mention about the power supply.

One of the things we constantly run across is issues whenever a motor is part of a project.

The solution is usually a rather large capacitor across the supply line.

Nano's tend ot have very little onboard power supply filtering, and I suspect you'll find the supply line is quite 'noisy' (electrically).

This may account for spikes and other unexpected results.

Maybe I'll do another design challenge sometime, but not straight away!

If I were to do it again, I could probably make him in 4 weeks working straight 8 hour days. If I had a laser cutter and 3D printer, you could take a week off of that.

Doing it from scratch without a 3D printer or laser cutter, however, was a different story. At the time, my electronics skills were only enough for me to wire power sources such as installing a car stereo or messing with home residential wiring. PCBs were a bunch of blips and bloops to me.

So, I had a lot of research, a lot of design files to find or make, a lot of software to learn (Eagle, Blender, C#), and a lot of trips back to the drawing board. I also never used a wood router before, which is the most dangerous tool I've used even compared to my welder.

So, I'd say I had more like 1500 or more hours over 4 years with everything required to get my brain to make my hands move in the right direction.

We're definitely grander for it, though. By the end of the journey, we got a 3D printer, learned PCB fabrication, and learned Autodesk Fusion. We can whip up a project pretty quickly.

A young mechanical engineer at work told me that one of our builds on our YouTube channel was like the senior year engineering projects he saw in school. I drew it up after work for fun and we banged it out on the weekend.

I didn't think about the importance of being self-taught as a kid and young man. For the boy, that is the #1 principle I am bestowing to him; regardless, of what he wants to do in life.
