Schematic help

Question

So I picked my laptop up today to use it as per normal (I rarely use it I admit) and well turns out it will not turn on, the battery is not charging and I have to repair it. I of course as per usual cannot find any schematics for this laptop it is to an extent ancient so I figured by now some schematics would show up since I cannot find any I was wondering if you guys have free schematics for an HP Envy 3D (17).

I mean I could probably work it out after a long period of time but I figured I would try to figure it out before I dive in narrow it down etc. I have a feeling it is a surface mount component since I hear something rattling around and well I have no magnifying device they all ran away at the same time not even kidding (I had two head ones and a regular magnifying glass lying around when I need one they all were gone). I know that I may very well can just figure out where a surface mount component goes and figure it out but this is not my first rodeo I know in the future other things will go wrong as well.

Also is there just normal surface mount resistors etc buyable online?

Hi Justin, It is unlikely that you will be able to find any schematics for any laptops. The manufacturers do not release these and even if they did they would be hard to read due to the complexity of circuits and components with many buses. Your best bet might be just what you suggested, careful observation. I would also carefully check the connections around your power input jack and also check your power supply to verify that you have voltage at the output plug. Good Luck. John

Hi Justin, I had a similar issue with a laptop and it turned out to be the connector (soldered to the motherboard) that the charger (external supply) plugged into. Over time, the connector wiggled back and forth enough to fracture the solder joints. I re-solder the connections to the motherboard and everything worked again. It has been my experience with a lot of commercial devices, that the weak link is usually associated with the connectors. I would also follow the above suggestions (good advice jw0752 and 14rhb ). Justin, What is making the rattling sound - the laptop or the external power supply ? Have you got access to a multimeter than can measure DC voltage? (1) Check if the power supply is working (at least without any load). (2) If the power supply is giving about the correct output (might be slightly higher without any loading), then I'd try taking the battery pack off the laptop and seeing if the power supply can run it (this could indicate a charging circuit or battery pack fault). My connector is not actually soldered directly to the board it is solder to some wires which is connected to the board which check out fine and the led lights up for it as well so that is okay. I found a spot where it looks like a tiny tiny tiny drop of water got in there and caused a nice short has a burnt spark spot I cannot replace that stuff though it is smaller than a pen head sadly. I have no microscope, no soldering iron small enough etc. I declare it dead. At least til I can do micro soldering which is never. She was well over ten years old so it was bound to happen.
