Good project. I also struggled a lot with VPN earlier to have access to my home Raspberry Pi. Then I found some tools still not optimal, but it works. !

For the modern world, I personally tend to prefer Wireguard to deploying OpenVPN-based systems. It's overall a lighter (for better throughput) and more auditable codebase being more modern, and it's only relatively mild in terms of set-up difficulty. Other options include using zero-trust type solutions like ZeroTier or Tailscale which are even more fancy, but have their own specific advantages when it comes to ease of client setup.

Still, always useful to have one of your own at home, as long as your ISP isn't amongst the increasing number that use CGNAT. In fact, this was one of the first reasons I had a Raspberry Pi running full-time, a VPN-lite using SSH tunneling only.
