Project14 | Tales for Makers: Submit Stories to Include in an Upcoming Book!

tariq.ahmad

25 May 2022

The theme this month is Tales for Makers and its in support of an upcoming book for balearicdynamics.   During our recently concluded challenge,   Better World with Arduino, Enrico began working on a book that will include stories that involve a fictional piece of technology.  The idea is to use story-telling to create a fictional world. The reader gets inspired by fictional technologies through short stories and is challenged to develop real-world projects using Arduino boards.

Tales for Makers is a series of (at least) eight stories set in the BDTH6159 Amusement Park in Los Angeles.

Examples of projects can be found here:

  • Tales for Makers - Episode 1: Where is Tommy?
  • Tales for Makers - Episode 2: Time Delay
  • Tales for Makers - Episode 3: Drone Patrol

The most creative projects (inspired by the stories) win a shopping cart and will have the option to have their projects printed in Enrico's upcoming book:

Your Chance to Win

Be Original
Stick to the Theme
  • You could come up with a clever name that make's your project memorable!
    • This project is your baby! Part of the fun of bringing something new into the world is coming up with a name.
  • Your project could introduce something new or that is not commercially available or affordable!
  • If you have an idea for a project that doesn't fit the current theme then submit your idea in the comments section of the monthly poll.
List the Steps
Submit Video Proof
  • Provide the steps you took to complete your project (text, video, or images).
    • This could be a step by step how-to-guide, vlog, schematics, coding, napkin drawings, voice narration, or whatever you think will be useful!
  • If it doesn't work that's fine, this is more about the journey than the end product.
  • A short video is all that is required but you can shoot as much video as you like.
  • You are encouraged to be creative and have as much fun as possible!

About Project14
Directions

Every month you'll have a new poll where you'll get to decide an upcoming project competition, based on your interests, that will take place a couple of months in advance. Themes are broad in scope so that everyone can participate regardless of skill set.

What are Monthly Themes?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) a new theme will be posted on Project14.
  • Submit your ideas (proposals) for your projects to get feedback from the rest of the community.
  • Submit a project entry in the Theme space once you start working on it.

What are Monthly Theme Polls?

  • Every month (around the 14th of each month) there is a project theme poll.
  • Vote on which project competition you want to see for the following upcoming theme.
    • The themes voted on during the previous poll decided the upcoming theme.
    • If you submit an idea for a theme that is not used then it can still be used in a future poll.
  • Themes comments and ideas from the comments section of the project theme poll.

Hi to all, thank you for following this challenge from an idea I had together with Tariq.

The tales have been temporarily suspended for a couple of weeks because there were some issues on the portal so…

Is the story supposed to incorporate use of the Arduino project?

Are projects in the "Better World With Arduino" contest supposed to be used in the story?

Does the Arduiino project need to be built, or is a project conceptual design enough?

When you say fictional technology it implies it doesn't exist - is the Arduino project supposed to exist and relate to the fiction technology?

Is the "fictional technology" supposed to be  something readers could develop with an Arduino?

Hello, dougw Tales for Makers is a project that comes from the "Make a better world with Arduino" so the two things are somehow related. As you can read in the presentation of the challenge This monthly theme is a bit different for some reasons. Let me resume by points:

    1. I am writing a series of short stories all connected following the same path creating a novel for Makers. These are the Tales for makers. This will be the same title book. It is half literary and half technical.
    2. The book will be finished by the month of September and it is expected to be available by the end of the year. It will be published by Apress publishing Co, NY during the following months, expected to be available before the end of the year.
    3. The book tales follow the same plot but are longer than the blog I am posting, that are only the plots of every tale.
    4. The plan is to post a new tale every two weeks (usually on Friday) – excluding this special case where the third one will be posted next June, 4th –
    5. There will be 8-10 tales in total, all posted in the same format as the first two, from now to the end of July. So, this monthly challenge is longer than usual.
    6. All the posts submitted to this challenge should use #tales4makersch tag and can also participate in other regular monthly challenges.
    7. The characteristics of the #tales4makersch projects are that should be inspired by an idea, a solution, or a strange technology you find in the tales.
    8. The projects should use any kind of Arduino board, together with any other kind of hardware.
    9. In every tale published in the book, I will associate a project I will specifically design and develop, inspired by the chapter as well. These projects will not be fully published on the Project14 challenge. They will be revealed only at the end of the challenge.

What happens to the #tales4makersch projects the community members post on Project14?

Of all the projects participating in the challenge, the most original, interesting, curious, etc. will be selected to be hosted as extra projects in the chapters related to the inspiring tale. The author of every winning project will be mentioned in the book, the project hosted in a chapter, and, of course, the author will receive a printed copy of the book as it will be available.

Some other winning rewards can be included by Element14, thanks to Project14 and tariq.ahmad which is helping this project to be a reality available to all the community members.

If your project deserves to be a guest project in one of the chapters of the Tales for Makers book, the project author should give some more authorization to publish its own work, but the specific rules will be put in detail in the next few days.

I hope that for now, this will clarify how this challenge works.

    Enrico

Hello, it is a type of Tariq. Please, replace "stories" with "projects".

I mean, you will read the plot (a preview of the book stories) including all the information to be able to think and make a project inspired by one of them. The winning projects will be hosted on the book. Nothing to do with the stories. I will remind Tariq to correct his mistake which can create confusion.
