I'm looking forward to this. Already bought my Pynq Z2 (maybe a little early). I can imagine that recommended camera would get used much afterwards, so I'll probably use a different HDMI source - a video (or a Pi camera) playing via a Raspberry Pi or something like that.

The two links for "US" and "UK" options for Crosstour cameras both link UK version of Amazon and do not ship to the US.

I am excited to get my feet wet with a FPGA dev board. This course claims to be able to take me from zero to hero. I'm more than a bit skeptical on that claim. I started following Adam Taylor on Twiter after seeing this course. I unfortunately missed the premier episode of The Embedded Hour with Adam Taylor today because I was called into work :-( Hopefully Adam will make a download of the episode available.

My interest in embedded systems was ignited when working on ABB paint robots. Their Integrated Paint System(in the 90's), now Integrated Process System/Solution (IPS) used multiple smart boards to maintain controlled paint delivery. Being an electrician for years, this delving into proper software revisions on replacement boards was a bit of a learning curve. A new board will come with the latest greatest SW rev. But it will not function properly on a system with older software. Here the gates open into using a Terminal emulator to connect via RS232 to put appropriate system files on the board so the following reboot will install the appropriate SW rev. The RTOS on the boards runs VxWorks by WindRiver.

I am eager to gain a function hands on understanding of some of these embedded systems boards. I like the idea of harnessing their potential to create innovative solutions for challenges in the manufacturing environment as well as potentially unlocking the door to some home automation / security / access control applications.

Hello All,

This is not directly related to this workshop, but, can someone point me to some tutorials and workshops about how to get started with programming the Zynq series FPGAs from Xilinx using C/C++ based tools like Vivado HLS and SDSoC?

I really wish to understand how modern FPGA design is done using high level languages.

I am setting up a VirtualBox VM to install all of the necessary software for the workshop.

I am curious which edition of Vivado 2019.1 is best to install: WebPACK, Design, or System?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Still waiting for the board though I have downloaded the pynq linux image.

Just a note for those preparing the lab using the document Embedded Vision, the link to the PYNQ boards on top of page 5 has a typo, it should be http://www.pynq.io/board without the 's' at the end.

Also check your jumpers, power from usb and boot from sd:

(These should be ok if you just received the board.)

Step 20 is missing two lines of code:

from pynq.overlays.logictools import LogicToolsOverlay

logictools_olay = LogicToolsOverlay('logictools.bit')

When I wrote this, it somehow got posted under Session #3. It would be nice if we just had one message board for all the three sessions!

Just thought I would add a few things that I encountered when setting up the PYNQ and running the QNN overlay etc. from the lab workbook.

1. There is no mention of connecting to the PYNQ using a terminal emulator (screen etc.). You can use "sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB1 115200"

Just check /dev/serial/by-id output to find the right "ttyUSBx". I have setup Vivado on and am connecting the board to a machine running Ubuntu 19.10

2. The password is lowercase xilinx (The lab book has an uppercase X as in Xilinx)

3. Someone already posted an error with the URL for the PYNQ-Z2 images. https://www.pynq.io/boards should be https://www.pynq.io/board.html

4. Step 20 for the LabOneWave exercise will fail since logictools_olay will be undefined until you do:

from pynq.overlays.logictools import LogicToolsOverlay

logictools_olay = LogicToolsOverlay('logictools.bit')

(i.e. the first two lines in Step 11 need to be repeated for THIS notebook before the pattern_generator can be set up)

5. I keep getting errors when running some cells such as:

/usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/pynq/pl_server/device.py:594: UserWarning: Users will not get PARAMETERS / REGISTERS information through TCL files. HWH file is recommended.

warnings.warn(message, UserWarning)

I ignore these since I have no idea what a HWH file is!

I am hoping to learn more about setting up the camera etc. during the actual workshop.

if pynq:9090 isn't working as an url - when you connect to the board via "sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB1 115200" run ifconfig and check what IP it got then use IP:9090 to access Jupyter notebook.

Awesome first workshop! I haven't worked with FPGA since 2013, but this board is sweet. I'm excited to use it with Python and Jupyter Notebook!

Is there a GitHub repository for this workshop? I couldn't access the pynq:9090 url so I'd like to download the Jupyter Notebook files.

Please advise.

FYI - be careful when copying and pasting code from the Lab PDF. Depending on your PDF viewer, you may end up with "smart" quotes that won't work in Python. For example:

logictools_olay = LogicToolsOverlay(‘logictools.bit’)

vs.

logictools_olay = LogicToolsOverlay('logictools.bit')

Today's Embedded Hour (also with Adam Taylor) had an excellent bit about Pynq by Cathal McCabe. Maybe not any completely new info if you've attended this webinar, but it was really interesting. I was really impressed that he was using Pynq full screen to do the presentation too - like PowerPoint with interactive embedded code.
