Benefiting from programmable logic and advanced ARM processor in ZYNQ, designers can build up more powerful embedded systems with it.

Download the lab book attached below to participate in this hands-on workshop!

Join us for a hands-on workshop with Adam Taylor, who will take you from Zero to Hero with using the PYNQ-Z2 board. Over the course of three sessions, you'll learn everything you need to know to get started and build an embedded vision application. No experience required. In-between sessions, blog about your learning experience to win badges, free swag, and enter to win a prize for completing your own embedded vision project.

Introduction

Python is one of the most popular languages in the world, being used for embedded, host and cloud application development thanks to its ease of use. Programmable Logic provides the ability to implement very high performance algorithms, traditionally at the cost of complexity of design.

PYNQ fuses the productivity and ease of use of Python with the acceleration provided by Programmable Logic, without the need to be an digital design engineer. This series of three workshops is going to provide attendees with a comprehensive training on PYNQ -- beginning with an introduction to key concepts, techniques before advancing to creating custom applications.

What You'll Need to workshop combines 3 build-along workshops with missions from Adam Taylor to do in between each session. These missions will give you a chance to apply what you learned during the workshop, while preparing for the next session. Along the way you can earn badges for participation and up to a $500 gift card for being a hero with your project.

<p style="margin:0;font-family:Arial, 'Lucida Grande', style="margin:0;padding:0px;">

This session will introduce the PYNQ Framework along with the PYNQ-Z2 development board and its capabilities. Primary focus will be on the base and logic tool overlays which come with PYNQ-Z2. These overlays enable us to interface with peripherals and access lower level digital logic functionality such as the Pattern Generation, FSM Generation and Logic Tracing. This session will also look at the existing overlays within the PYNQ community and how they can be installed into the PYNQ-Z2 for future use. Your mission: Update the overlay to include additional features.

Post a BlogPost a Blog

Blog about your experience using PYNQ-Z2 by showing us what you can do after watching the workshop. Win a Starter Badge for posting your PYNQ-Z2 experience by creating a blog anywhere on the community with the tag pynqstarter!

Dates and Register for Free:

Workshop:

Dates and Missions:

Session 1 - Getting Started with PYNQ

What You'll Learn:

PYNQ Framework and PYNQ-Z2 Development Board

Base and Logic Tool Overlays

How to install existing overlays from the PYNQ Community

Tuesday, 5th of May 2020

Register Above for Free!

Your Mission:

Update the overlay to include additional features.

Blog about your PYNQ experience and tag it pynqstarter I'm more than a bit skeptical on that claim. I started following Adam Taylor on Twiter after seeing this course. I unfortunately missed the premier episode of The Embedded Hour with Adam Taylor today because I was called into work :-( Hopefully Adam will make a download of the episode available.

My interest in embedded systems was ignited when working on ABB paint robots. Their Integrated Paint System(in the 90's), now Integrated Process System/Solution (IPS) used multiple smart boards to maintain controlled paint delivery. Being an electrician for years, this delving into proper software revisions on replacement boards was a bit of a learning curve. A new board will come with the latest greatest SW rev. But it will not function properly on a system with older software. Here the gates open into using a Terminal emulator to connect via RS232 to put appropriate system files on the board so the following reboot will install the appropriate SW rev. The RTOS on the boards runs VxWorks by WindRiver.

I am eager to gain a function hands on understanding of some of these embedded systems boards. There is no mention of connecting to the PYNQ using a terminal emulator (screen etc.). You can use "sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB1 115200"

  Just check /dev/serial/by-id output to find the right "ttyUSBx". I have setup Vivado on and am connecting the board to a machine running Ubuntu 19.10

2. The password is lowercase xilinx (The lab book has an uppercase X as in Xilinx)

3. Someone already posted an error with the URL for the PYNQ-Z2 images. https://www.pynq.io/boards should be https://www.pynq.io/board.html

4. Step 20 for the LabOneWave exercise will fail since logictools_olay will be undefined until you do:

     from pynq.overlays.logictools import LogicToolsOverlay

     logictools_olay = LogicToolsOverlay('logictools.bit')

   (i.e. the first two lines in Step 11 need to be repeated for THIS notebook before the pattern_generator can be set up)

5. I keep getting errors when running some cells such as:

/usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/pynq/pl_server/device.py:594: UserWarning: Users will not get PARAMETERS / REGISTERS information through TCL files.
