For those of you that have another version of Vivado (like 2019.2) on their system as well as Vivado 2019.1 (which is the one you really need for this lab!):

Before you run the build_ip.bat make sure the version of vivado_hls you will be running is the 2019.1 version, in a terminal run:

vivado_hls -version

You could run the following in the terminal where you will run build_ip.bat

# On Windows
set PATH=C:\Xilinx\Vivado\2019.1\bin;%PATH%
# On Linux
export PATH=/Xilinx/Vivado/2019.1/bin:$PATH

The script will run with the 2019.2 version, but when you run the python notebook the python kernel will crash...

For the tpd_pynq.py file, make sure you have the indentation correct (4 spaces or a tab, but be consistent)

Looking at the lab book 2 I have few comments:

Steps (or group of steps) lack short description - what's the goal, what will we do and what it will give us. Everything seems to arbitrary (it's a lab book, but still)
The whole example is made by someone that works daily with Vivado, Zynq/Pynq, while for people outside of the loop it can be complicated or lack clear purpose and meaning - like look at the connections and elements on step 36 (and "why we even do this and what it does and why?")
Electronics hello world seems to be LED / buttons so why not simplify it as much as possible and make some GPIO function as digital output/input for them? (would require some additional hardware sadly, or at minimum some jumper wires)
- then it could be expanded later on with SPI/I2C/Serial and more
- Most people with electronics/IoT background will be quite likely familiar with Arduino, Raspberry Pi or MicroPython/Micro:bit and alike - that's GPIO
- Mentioned people aren't the target commercial audience, but still it's a big community of makers that can make projects "for fun" and keep the buzz level high. You want PYNQ to be features in Adafruit newsletter, to be showcased in a project on /r/python, to have fan made youtube channels like even Nvidia Jetson has.
There is focus on image/video processing/sensing but not everything has to be image/video from the get-go. It's good to know from the last sentence of the work book that we will be updating this arbitrary piece of code to do some image processing
IMHO Open nature of element14 webinars should make it also aimed at non-commercial recipients with more showcasing. This is free and basic, while https://www.embeddedonlineconference.com/session/PYNQ_Using_FPGA_to_Accelerate_Python_applications is $290 and a highly focused conference on pro stuff.

Watch out if you have spaces in your pathname, as the high-level synthesis batch file process at step 19 is likely to (silently) fail and you will find that you will only have IPs(19) showing in the repository at step 21 instead of IPs(27), and that you won't find the new IP in step 22.

It seems like a few of us have run through it in advance! I spent ages struggling with a small typo right at the final step (one _ rather than two in the init.py filename).

Another really good session. In particular I thought the explanation as to why the IP was configured that way was really helpful.

Enjoyed the session. The biggest hurdle with Xilinx FPGAs is working through the documentation so Adam's explanations about the IP are very helpful.

It might just be my particular setup but the live display of Adam's screen when he was sharing Vivado was pretty bad (unreadable). I was following along with my own Vivado project on another monitor so it didn't cause me problems.

Well here it is less than 30 minutes until session 3, I just have finished the follow along from session 2. (using bitstream built from "pynq_z2_overlay.xpr.zip" that Adam shared, mine ended up having errors). After building the bitstream and loading them on the board a couple of times for having to remove them from typos, I finally was able to follow through with the lesson. Unfortunately not yet the homework of modifying it.

I am enjoying the course! Thank you, Adam and Tariq!

I haven't had the chance to go through the pdf for today's lab yet but I did see where it mentioned having higher resolution images, Thank You!

I think it is cool how you can rewatch the session in the same layout as a live webinar but I think there would be a benefit to having a video hosted somewhere of a 720p or so screen capture so that it is easier to bookmark and jump around to specific parts of the lesson where being able to read the text on the screen is super helpful.

I am having an issue with this part of Lab #2:

Uploading to the PYNQ-Z2 47. We are now ready to upload the overlay to our PYNQ-Z2. Power up the board and open WinSCP. Use the host name of pynq and the username and password of xilinx.

The host pynq is not found.

Please advise.

Hi,

I'm not getting PYNQ-Z2 board from the board list. I'm using VIVADO 2019.1 as mentioned in the lab workbook-2.

How can i manually add the vendor tul.com.tw. I clicked update Board Repositories but nothing gets reflected in the vendor name list for inclusion of tul.com.tw

Hi,

I ran the build_ip.bat from the downloaded PYNQ-master github and have added the repository from settings option but unable to add color_convert, pixel_pack IPs. I can add VDMA & Test Pattern Generator IPs only as shown below.

Kindly guide me to resolve it.
