Hi all:

Found about this "course" (and hardware) via an email from Avnet earlier today.

My son is getting his MBA and is pitching a startup that involves computer vision software (in the biopharma space) to recognize actions and perform documentation. As such, this "course" caught my eye and I figured I'd give it a go.

Just ordered all the requisite hardware, but . . . am embarrassed to ask . . . is all the programming going to be done on this board (I looked at the software links, but none it was for an OS) or will I use my PC to run the Jupiter notebook, Python, etc.?

i.e., can you give me a better idea on what's going to go down in Session One . . software-wise, in particular?

FWIW, i'm a hospital/healthcare data consultant who has used SAS since the mid-70' (yeah, I'm that old), but am in the early stages of teaching myself Python (because that seems to be more in demand for data analytics, these days, than SAS) and, as of now, I am using Anaconda (for the lessons, VS Code for writing Python code to mimic my SAS programs), not Jupiter . . . I mention all this b/c, clearly, I'm no Python wiz (yet ) but the docs, up above, said "zero to hero" . . . so I went for it . . . but wanted to touch base and make sure.

Thanks in advance for any feedback and feel free to let me know if you think I'll be in over my head.

on the camera, if you have bought the hdmi camera, you can continue with it, myself advocating to use my roku (it has hdmi out and can mirror android phone) + android phone (as the camera)

Just thought I would add a few things that I encountered when setting up the PYNQ and running the QNN overlay etc. from the lab workbook.

1. There is no mention of connecting to the PYNQ using a terminal emulator (screen etc.). You can use "sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB1 115200"

Just check /dev/serial/by-id output to find the right "ttyUSBx". I have setup Vivado on and am connecting the board to a machine running Ubuntu 19.10

2. The password is lowercase xilinx (The lab book has an uppercase X as in Xilinx)

3. Someone already posted an error with the URL for the PYNQ-Z2 images. https://www.pynq.io/boards should be https://www.pynq.io/board.html

4. Step 20 for the LabOneWave exercise will fail since logictools_olay will be undefined until you do:

from pynq.overlays.logictools import LogicToolsOverlay

logictools_olay = LogicToolsOverlay('logictools.bit')

(i.e. the first two lines in Step 11 need to be repeated for THIS notebook before the pattern_generator can be set up)

5. I keep getting errors when running some cells such as:

/usr/local/lib/python3.6/dist-packages/pynq/pl_server/device.py:594: UserWarning: Users will not get PARAMETERS / REGISTERS information through TCL files. HWH file is recommended.

warnings.warn(message, UserWarning)

I ignore these since I have no idea what a HWH file is!

I am hoping to learn more about setting up the camera etc. during the actual workshop.

HDMI Camera (Any camera as long as HDMI Output is 720p or lower!)

Is that the update? I would expect 4K in 2020 Or that 8K from Red cameras

Will have to check what modes my 1080p microscope stand-alone camera can do.

Ready to learn the inner details of this lab

One tip:

If you have installed the Digilent IP library and Vivado asks you to upgrade the dvi2rgb from v1.7 to v2.0, don't do that, just build the bitstream. It will save you some time ;-)

Just a couple of areas which may catch people out if they are following along with the third lab workbook and working with the Vivado design files they created themselves in the second workshop.

AXI Interconnect

If you are starting using the Vivado design created in the second workshop, then the AXI Interconnect will likely have 4 master outputs configured.

The screenshot in step 7 of the lab workbook however shows it with 7 outputs configured and thus additional clock connections are also connected.

The screenshot in step 9 then shows 6 master outputs and once again the additional reset connections connected.

You aren't instructed to re-customize the AXI Interconnect until step 11, where you reconfigure it with 6 master outputs. After doing this, you will need to revisit steps 7 and 9 to connect the additional clocks and resets for connections M04_ACLK, MO4_ARESETN, MO5_ACLK, and MO5_ARESETN, so that it matches the screenshot in step 9.

Concat

If you are starting using the Vivado design created in the second workshop, then the Concat block connected to the AXI Interrupt Controller is likely to have 3 inputs configured. One input becomes unused after deleting the Video Test Generator block. This is shown in the screenshot in step 7.

In the screenshot in step 8 though, Concat now has 4 inputs, and In0 and In3 are now shown connected to the IRQ connections on the new frontend block.

Re-customizing the Concat block or making these two connections isn't outlined in the lab workbook though, so is an additional step.
