Accelerate your Azure Sphere Software Development

Develop custom Azure Sphere applications faster and get to market before the competition.

Microsoft has been working on an Azure Sphere development accelerator called DevX and a companion application code generator called GenX. This development system allows engineering teams to quickly build out High Level Azure Sphere applications using proven architectural patterns and standard interfaces. Once the application is generated, the developer only needs to fill out key areas with application code to meet the project’s requirements. The system implements interfaces to send telemetry data, manage device twins, direct methods and timers with handlers. Leveraging these systems will reduce the amount of code developers write and will improve readability and long-term application maintenance.

This three part webinar series will introduce students to this system and provide hands on labs and homework assignments to reinforce Azure Sphere application development fundamentals and Azure cloud concepts. By the end of the series students will develop their own custom Secure Azure Sphere application that interacts with the IoTCentral cloud solution.

The Azure Sphere MT3620 Starter Kit 2.0 is an enhanced version of Avnet’s popular Azure Sphere Starter Kit. It supports rapid prototyping of highly secure, end-to-end IoT implementations based on Microsoft Azure Sphere. This small form-factor carrier board includes a production-ready MT3620 Sphere module with WiFi connectivity, along with multiple expansion interfaces facilitating easy integration of sensors, displays, motors, relays and more. Key features of this version are its ability to support a wired Ethernet network connection (requires MikroE ETH click adapter to be fitted) as well as more flexibility in how ISUs can be used. Downloadable documentation and tutorials guide developers through all steps, from board setup to application coding.

My name is Brian Willess, I'm the instructor for this webinar. I'm really excited to share my experiences, materials and instruction to help you learn how to develop and deploy Azure Sphere Secure IoT Solutions. I've been working hard to prepare for next week's session and I have some materials that I want to share that will help you prepare for the first session.

First let me state that this webinar is not a marketing presentation, we're going to get deep into developing Azure Sphere solutions. My goal is to guide everyone to develop your own custom solution. This will give you the hands-on experience you need to feel comfortable developing on this secure platform in the future. Azure Sphere is not like any platform you've worked with before. Because of the security, there are details that developers need to understand to be productive when developing applications.

I usually take two full days to train engineering teams on this topic, so 3 - 1 1/2 hour sessions creates some challenges. My approach will be to provide additional details off-line for you to review on your own time. In the live sessions, I'll target the topics that will help you develop easy to maintain Azure Sphere solutions very efficiently. If you have issues or questions you can always post here and I'll answer your questions or help you past a hurdle.

To make sure everyone is ready for the first session I wanted to share the following requirements . . .

You should have an Azure Sphere development kit. All the materials target the Avnet Azure Sphere Starter Kit (Rev1 or Rev2). If you have a Seeed kit, that's better than nothing but the examples I have created leverage sensors included on the Avnet kits.

You can purchase an Avnet Azure Sphere Starter Kit here.

Please complete Labs #0, #1, #2 and #5 before the first session. These labs will help you setup the development tools, create the necessary accounts and gain an understanding of the solution.

Lab-0: Install the development tools

Lab-1: Create an Azure Sphere Tenant, and prepare your device for development

Lab-2: Pull an example repo, build and run the demo application

Lab-5: Deploy an Azure IoTCentral application. Modify the example application (from Lab-2) to connect to your Azure IoTCentral application, then control your device from the cloud.

I've created a shared folder where you can access all the materials for the class. I'll be adding files to this folder as the webinar progress, so bookmark the site for future use.

The shared site has the following folders to help you get through the pre-work and learn more about the solution . . .

 StartHereAzureSphereOverview

This folder contains video recordings of a training session I hosted for internal Avnet engineers. There are 5 video lectures reviewing the Azure Sphere solution, and two with me walking through labs #1 and #2. I'll add a third later today with a Lab-5 walkthrough.

I recommend watching these in the order that they are numbered

LabDocuments

This folder contains the lab documents

Azure Subscription: You don't need to have an Azure Subscription to get the most from the class, but it will help you in the long run. The class materials target using the Azure IoTCentral cloud solution because it's easy to use and is free as long as you don't connect more than 2 devices to your application. If you don't have an Azure Subscription, you can create a free IoTCentral application that's good for 7-day. After that period you'll need to convert it to an Azure Subscription, or recreate the application. If you associate your IoTCentral application with an Azure Subscription, it's still free (as long as you only connect 1-2 devices), but you can use it forever for free!

Follow this link to sign up for a Free Azure Subscription with $200 credit,

I think that's enough for now. Again, I'm excited to help you learn about this solution and how easily and quickly you can create highly secure application using Azure Sphere! Feel free to post questions here and I'll answer them in a timely manner.

Looking forward to the Workshops, have done most of the Lab's, all seem to work fine. There is however one thing I can't get to work. That is the direct connection with an IoT -Hub, no DPS, etc. I've done this many times with Rapsberry's. EPS, etc. The thing is that I believe you would need to put the key for that device somewhere in the actual code, but in none of the examples this is done? Anny suggestions, obviously in real life we want to use DPS, but sometimes for a quick demo of test it is easier just to use an IoTHUB direct connection. The device is registered, the connection with the HUB is made, but no telemetry!

I've completed my BBQ Monitor Azure Sphere application development to meet all my documented requirements.

You can see all my changes with short video code reviews in the BBQ Monitor Blog. The most recent updates to the blog include details on . . .

Creating custom hardware definition files for Azure Sphere high-level applications

Adding PWM support for a Buzz CLICK board

Adding GPIO support for the on-board RGB Led

Adding I2C support to drive my OLED display

Adding telemetry support

I've done my best to be terse and to the point in the blog and in the short videos.
