Before they launched the webinar, they wanted to get your help on focusing on this topic.

What I need you to do

If you have the time, please take a look at the webinar briefs below. I'd appreciate you voting on all 4 topics, that is, your degree of interest. It's always a challenge to offer a webinar, so your feedback is really important. Thanks.

Topic 1: Why Ruggedization and Miniaturization is the new big trend in Connector Design
The electronics industry has long grappled with the trade-off between ruggedness and miniaturization. Ruggedized components designed to withstand harsh conditions are often bulky and heavy for added protection. Conversely, miniaturized components, valued for their compact form factor, can be perceived as more delicate and less robust. How can connectors be designed to have both qualities?

[Please visit the site to access the poll]

Topic 2: Making Room for Rugged, Reliable Connected Applications
Vehicles are no longer just vehicles — they’re mobile data centers running a slew of customized apps. By 2030, electronics are expected to make up 50% of the cost of a new car, up from 35% in 2010. One problem that automakers are having is that they are running out of room to install more connections. That means they must pick and choose which popular features to include, inevitably disappointing some customers. They must also ensure the reliability of sensitive electronic equipment in harsh interior and exterior environments. The more software and hardware connections a vehicle contains, the greater the chance for problems. Recent innovations in electronics are helping manufacturers solve these complex problems and pave the way for more sophisticated automation in the future.

[Please visit the site to access the poll]

Topic 3: Exploring the Concept of Rugged Miniaturised Connectors
Life on the road for a vehicle isn’t easy, and few applications expose electronic systems and their components to a wider range of environmental considerations than transportation. From internal engine vibrations and battery heat to extreme factors like ice, sand and rain, transportation applications are the ultimate test of connector reliability. But as the industry increasingly demands more feature-heavy and more efficient vehicles, trucks, bikes and other means of transport, design engineers must also simultaneously design for higher electronic densities, smaller space considerations and reduced weights.

[Please visit the site to access the poll]

Topic 4: Designing Robots for High Vibration Activities
Rugged connectors are key to supporting the reliability and longevity of robotic systems prone to high vibrations, such as those caused by movement and terrain. Molex’s rugged, miniature connectors are well suited for robots that are consistently exposed to vibration.

[Please visit the site to access the poll]

Many thanks for participating in our Webinar Survey!

What Versal Topics Do You Want Adam Taylor to Cover in an Upcoming Webinar?

Greetings members,

Delivering the Digital Cockpit - Accustomed to a steady stream of real-time information delivered by their smartphones, today’s car buyers increasingly expect the same kind of experience in their vehicles. Automakers are responding with multiple screens, cameras and sensors to keep passengers safe, comfortable, entertained and in the know about the weather, traffic conditions and the location of the next gas or charging station.

Driving Towards a Driverless Future - To become completely driverless, future vehicles will contain hundreds of sensors, all producing data that will need to be processed, interpreted, and acted upon. If this can be done well then there is no doubt that road safety will improve immeasurably, given that over 90% of all accidents are caused by the vehicle’s driver.

The Move to an Energy Efficient Automotive Future - The automotive industry is transitioning with speed towards a more energy-efficient future, fueled by leading manufacturers investing heavily in electrification and hybrid technologies. At the consumer level, the conversation is slightly different but just as energetic. People are excited about the concept of a more environmentally friendly solution to personal transport, one that has the potential to give us everything we need with little to no emissions.

Predicting Automotive Electronics Performance with Digital Twins - igital twins have already revolutionized automotive design and manufacturing, but what happens when that approach is applied to the component level? A team of Molex engineers is now developing product digital twins and using a virtual world to predetermine performance capabilities and lifespan.

The Car of 2030: An Extension of the Connected Home - When thinking about what cars will look and be like in 2030, there’s a lot to get excited about, according to findings of Molex’s recently released “The Future of Automotive” survey. Topping the list, we can expect the majority of these vehicles to be electric and safer while offering a full menu of connectivity options and customized experiences.

Removing Roadblocks to Vehicle Electrification - The future is electric. Given its fast memory speeds and low power consumption, LPDDR4 has seen widespread adoption and quite a few of our dev boards utilize it. But if we felt there's something more to learn about LPDDR4 and that's why a webinar is on our agenda.

We have some experts in the technology who want to share what they know. So, what would you like to know about LPDDR4? A tech deep dive? Unique use cases in mobile and embedded engineering? Would you like a comparison between LPDDR4 and the new high bandwidth DDR5? Please leave your comments below. These webinars are intended for anyone who is looking for valuable career advice, regardless of what point they are in at their career. While the need for seeking career advice when you're trying to land your first job right out of college, or if you just lost the job you are in now, is apparent. What might not be apparent, is the need to keep seeking the next opportunity when you feel "comfortable" at the job you're in. A virtual panel on careers is something that I find really interesting because no matter where you are at in your career, and because everyone's career journey in unique, everyone has a perspective that adds value to the conversation.

The two guests we have for the first session have very different backgrounds. Terry Collier has over 20 years of experience working for 3M. He's a natural leader and has been in many roles that have required him to lead. He now works as an Application Level Engineer, but before that, he led strategic planning on a team that worked on critical projects to support manufacturing improvements; worked on a team to develop new technology for LED TVs; developed, commercialized, and supported products for solar and wind energy; among other roles. As an engineer, you may be expected to assume many different roles throughout the life of your career, and we're looking forward to the insight that Terry will bring to this conversation. Joining him is Colin McGoldrick, for those of you that have not yet started in your career in engineering, Colin brings insight into what its like to try to get your foot in the door, having auditioned extensively with Molex through many internship programs, and having successfully secured employment through those opportunities. While the experience of getting his foot in the door is still fresh, he'll give us insight on what its like at the early stage of a career in engineering. Recently, we added Axel Schmidt to the list of panelists. Axel, a Senior Technical Marketing Manager with Kemet. He brings 16 years of experience with Kemet and an additional 9 years of experience at TE Connectivity.

When we set up this virtual panel, we thought it would be very cool, to also invite members to have their perspective. After all, this is a community of engineers, and we want to keep this conversation as honest as possible, and hear what our members have to say, as well. The two members we'll be joined by will do a great job rounding out the conversation, as both of them are now retired, after years of service in their respective fields. Thank you to dubbie and DAB for volunteering and adding your perspective to this conversation. Many of you that are on the community are familiar with them by the impact that their great work has had on the community.

dubbie , has done a lot of projects involving robotics on the community and DAB has been active member on the community for a while, especially when it comes to judging project competitions, which is something the Project14 program, particularly, relies on to make it work. What you may not be familiar with is the background that has led them to be a part of this online community for engineers. He did his degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering under sponsorship of the company he would work at for the next 6 months. When he realized that this was not for him, he got his PHD in Mobile Robotics, and this led to a 37 year career as a lecturer at a university, teaching various aspects of electronics, embedded systems, computer systems and robotics. He progressed through to Senior Lecturer, then Principal Lecturer and ended up as Deputy Head of Systems Engineering. For the last 15 years he mostly taught on Masters Programmes.

DAB began as an electronics technician and worked his way up to becoming a Systems engineer upon graduating with a degree in Computer Engineering. Over the next twenty five years we worked on a wide range of advanced aerospace projects. At his last company, he began a student mentoring program that enabled the company to hire many students and transition them to engineers. When he retired, over forty of his students were full engineers with the organization and one was Chief Engineer of the local office. Since retiring, he has begun to mentor a small company doing crop analysis using drones and is now mentoring three students as they learn systems engineering and image/spectral processing techniques.

If you have any ideas of how you want this work, or ways we can improve this experience, let us know in the comments below. I'm excited about this upcoming series and I hope you are too. We can use all the support we can get for this so if you haven't registered to attend this webinar, please do so! :-)

Tariq

What Got You Started in Your Career in Engineering?

In the Comments Below: Let Us Know How You Got Started in Your Career!

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. It is used for switching or amplifying signals It is a solid-state device that replaces a coil-activated mechanical switch with an optically isolated input stage driving a MOSFET. It offers superior performance to an electromechanical relay in many applications. Internally, a MOSFET relay includes an input-side LED and an output side with a photodiode dome array (PDA), a control circuit, and an output FET block.

A electromechanical relay is an electromagnetic switch operated by a relatively small electric current that can turn on or off a much larger electric current. At the heart of the relay is an electromagnet, a coil of wire that becomes a temporary magnet when electricity flows through it.

The electromechanical relay, was used in some early calculators and computers and invented in 1835 by Joseph Henry, an American pioneer of Electromagnetism. Henry's interest was solely in the science of electricity and the relay began as a laboratory trick to entertain students. It was at the College of New Jersey that Joseph Henry demonstrated the first primitive "relay" telegraph. He used a self-made electromagnet to arrange a small intensity magnet to control a much larger quantity magnet. This led to speculation that the relays could be used to control electrical machines over large distances, a principle that would be applied to another invention he was working on, the electric telegraph, a forerunner of the telephone. This invention was successfully developed by William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone in England and more famously, Samuel F.B. Morse in the United States. The relay was later used in telephone switching and early computers. It remained hugely popular until the transistor came along in the late 1940s.

A good place to start if you are unfamiliar with the basics of electromagnets, transmitters, relays, and electronics in general is The Learning Circuit with makerkaren:

The Learning Circuit 27: How Transistors Work

The Learning Circuit 35: Electricity & Magnetism

The Learning Circuit 36: DIY Electromagnet

The Learning Circuit 44: Switches: Poles, Throws & Relays

There's also A Bald Engineer Video: MOSFET Tutorial by baldengineer who is best known on the community for his work on WorkBench Wednesdays and element14 presents:

www.youtube.com/watch

In it he talks about how MOSFETs are the most common transistors used today. They are switches that can be used an Arduino, BeagleBone, or Raspberry Pi. If you love robots (who doesn't on a site whose unofficial mascot is a dancing robot) then you got to support this great content by signing up to attend the live stream on May 29th, 5:30 CST or 10:30 PM GMT:

Project14 | Recorded Live Stream: Robotics: Tribute to Gordon McComb: Community Presenters with Special Guest MATRIX Labs!

The format will be similar to the first live stream but we've made some adjustments from the last time. We've invited more community members to join us and talk about anything related to robotics. We'll also have robotics show & tell's and do a book giveaway of Robot Builder's Bonanza Fifth Edition by Gordon McComb. I downloaded this onto my kindle and while I haven't gone through the whole book, I found it very enjoyable and accessible for even those that are not technologically inclined. It was very in the spirit of what we've tried to make Project14 become. If you have no experience with robotics, you can read it from cover to cover and begin building your own robotics projects. If you are more experienced, it contains a lot of useful information that will allow you to thumb through and learn something you never knew. First published in 1987, it's a book that led MAKE magazine to declare Gordon McComb the Father of Robotics. In his honor we're going to have a live stream devoted exclusively to robotics projects.

You can also get your hands on a MATRIX Voice by participating in the following roadtest:

Matrix VOICE Dev Board

And ask your questions directly to MATRIX Labs. If you want some ideas of questions check out the following poll:

Project14 | Live Stream & something to do with a couple of the topics mentioned during the live stream) and something fans of Arduino are going to be interested in finding out about the MATRIX Voice.... Project14 Live Streams are the first live streams on the community where community members present, so this is an opportunity to support your fellow community members, and keep this a program One of the programs that stands out for the community is the great webinars we put on with industry leaders that bring you closer to cutting edge technology. You don't have to dig too deeply to convince people interested in Cellular technology that a webinar that opens up the world of how cellular networks operate is well worth your time. John Culver has a really personable speaking style and you can tell that he can not only speak authoritatively on the subject, but he's eager to do so in an approachable style that makes it easy for anyone to understand. It's is the kind of webinar you've got to love. The webinar is intended for engineers with no previous knowledge of how a cellular network operates, but even if you're just a technology enthusiast who is interested in doing projects that involve cellular technology, you're sure to pick up something you'll find useful. John's got a wealth of experience in cellular technology, having been with Siretta, an Industrial IoT company, since 1988, and working with cellular networks since 1997.

He'll give you an overview of how cellular networks operate and let you know how cellular network surveying works. Introducing a tool which you can get your hands on with the following Roadtest:

Siretta Cellular Signal Strength Data Logger

This is your chance to check out a webinar on cellular network surveying, learn why this is something you would be interested in, and then get your hands on a cellular network survey tool through our roadtest program.

What you'll learn:

• we introduced a new platform for webinars/live streams called On24. I helped out with Q&A but never really got to dig in deep with the platform till recently. The reason for the switch was that it promised a more engaging experience than was currently possible. At the time, Project14 was mentioned as a candidate for the new platform. Well, the time has come, and the upcoming Project14 Live Stream & Giveaway promises to offer you a different experience than you are use to on the element14 community.

For one thing, we will attempt to stay true to what makes the Project14 program such a welcome addition to the element14 community's family of programs, we will focus on projects. We've made friends with the MATRIX Labs folks and they have agreed to be our special guests. You'll learn more from them on using the MATRIX Creator in your projects. It will also be the first live stream where the community members present. We've got an all star line up to join us, consisting of balearicdynamics , gam3t3ch tells by gam3t3ch & Sean_Miller All of them will be presenters on the live stream, so this will be the first time we've had community members as presenters for a live stream.

This will be my first time as the host of a webinar / live stream so your support would be really appreciated. The hope is that if this is successful, we can invite more community member presenters to interact with a special guest of interest. I will try to use the time between now and then to help ensure things run smoothly but like all things you do for the first time, there will be lessons to be learned, especially with how different this one promises to be.

Sign up to the webinar and help support this special event:

Project14 | Live Stream & But I also get a lot of email from different tech journals that keep me up on what is hot when I really don't have time to read every article I find interesting.

One of the hot topics is 5G. That is, the 5th Generation.

The big benefits of 5G is greater bandwidth and much less latency. It will immensely benefit IoT solutions in the future. I won't mention that actual numbers, because they are sure to change next month or next year.

I think everyone should know something about 5G and the developments and components of 5G, even if it isn't directly impacting them at this time. If for no other thing....curiosity.

That's why I suggest that you attend the element14 5G webinar on Mar 27th.

How to see you there!

If you haven't registered, here's the link: How 5G will Impact IoT and Mass Connectivity

How CircuitStudio's Supplier Links Features Makes it Easier for to Make Better Part Selection's in your PCB Design

Being able to establish supplier-linked component data early in the design cycle, and review this information throughout the design process, allows you to make valid part decisions based on current component specifications, data sheets, physical properties, and availability and pricing information.

The above statement summs up a feature in CircuitStudio called "Supplier Links."

I'd like to drill down and talk about Supplier links in a little more detail.

The Whys of Supplier Links ....From the Beginning

Access to electronic component resources is essential to the success of a PCB design because the symbols and models you use only represent the virtual equivalent of ‘real-world’ components – that is, the physical parts that are ultimately loaded into a manufactured circuit board. Deciding which actual parts are used in the design – with what specifications, from which manufacturers and suppliers, and at what price – is a crucial part of the design process that usually involves considerable research and product comparison.

That's the "why" of Supplier Links. It takes the pressure off of you because Supplier Linsk form by a direct connection to suppliers, which in turn allows you to search across all supplier databases supported by CircuitStudio. When the desired part is selected, a link is added to the local schematic component as a set of parameters. This link connection is then re-established each time the component is opened in a schematic or library, and is, therefore, guaranteed to reflect the current supplier’s data for that component.

In CircuitStudio, Supplier Links can be added to components in a project or components within a Schematic Library. Supplier Links added to components in a project are exclusive to that project, and Supplier Links added to a library component will become available in any project that uses that library component.

Want To Learn More

Are you interested in learning more about Supplier Links? After all you need something to sense the physical world to make some "sense" of it. There will be huge sensor networks monitoring various conditions (i.e., environmental), and they'll be generating a lot of critical data that will be important to us. Health conditions or wide-ranging sensor networks for earthquake alert systems. It's rather incredible once you think about it.

The problem is that there are "bad actors" that want to mess with this data if it isn't protected. Hence, securing IOT saensors is an important knowledge point or skill to have.

I think learning about securing IoT sensors is worth your time.
