Around 40 years ago I was introduced to an educational toy called Fischertechnik and 40 years later I'm still buying it...

It predates Lego Technic and was a lot more refined than the plastic Meccano at the time.

Even back then their electronic 'Hobby' sets included components such as logic gates and slip rings to use along side the basic building blocks, motors etc. not found in other educational toys.

Early on they were creating industrial robot models for training and in the 80's their product was used in the 'BBC Buggy' line following robot kit.

Today they are still producing more advance robotics kits:
