Poll: What is the most common type of temperature sensor used in medical applications?

Designing electrical and electronic systems for medical instruments, devices, or other applications have special requirements for ensure the safety, precision, and reliability. As such, they must meet rigid regulations and standards of quality. When selecting a temperature sensor for a medical application, one must examine both the essential requirements and key characteristics of the application to select the appropriate type of sensor.

  • We used a lot of the forehead stickers on the ambulance. They stayed in place unless the patient was diaphoretic and there was nothing to clean and sterilize to reuse. When we transferred care the nurses didn’t care much for them, but we sure loved them.

  • For medical, most Doctor use ear type thermometer for diagnostic which require new jacket for every measure because it is much accuracy.

    As COVID, most non-contacted Infrared sensor mainly used for crowd screen not for medical diagnosis.

    Such as many International Airport currently screen the passengers by Infrared sensor and use Ear type thermometer for verify.

    Agree with your points. Anyhow, I haven't got experience with some of the sensor types listed above so it is interesting to stay tuned on this topic

  • The difficulty with this poll is that it is too widely focused. Thermal sensors are used in so many different types of medical equipment and in so many different ways that it is impossible to choose without more qualification. In the medical equipment area that i was most involved (sterilization and external systems) we saw the use of thermocouples, thermistors, and diodes to regulate processes but this is only one of many different areas of medical application.

    agree with your point, but most medical appliances are not for measuring body temperature thermometer. In fact, i find NTC thermistor components are accepted in the healthcare sector as the most versatile sensors for monitoring applications. In disposable medical temperature products, NTC thermistors are used to optimize monitoring accuracy and clinical hygienic standards.

    I voted non-contact IR because it is so widely used in basic medical thermometers that a lot of people also have at home. Non-contact IR may not be used in the most sophisticated medical instruments but I suspect these basic thermometers are by far the most common.

  • the highest vote (which i am not in) is pretty much explained by the popular used to non contact sensor used nowadays due to covid19, but in my opinion, most other instrument doesn't use it.

  • Sorry Randal - I really don't get this one - either one is an expert on the subject and knows the answer, or one isn't.

    The question I can answer is what kind of temperature sensor have I actually used in a medical application:

     

    The forward voltage of a semiconductor device which already performs a critical function in the system - I suspect this a bit of an outlier and add my other vote to John's.

  • I'm assuming that thermometer means a mercury in glass style thermometer, because they are all by definition thermometers if they're being used to measure temperature.
