SEIKO RFID has developed an RFID solution to paying parking fees. A RFID chip laden sticker, 1.5 x 10 centimeters, is placed on the windshield. The communication band uses the ultra-high frequency (UHF) range with a maximum distance of 8 meters. As the vehicle passes through a gate, or toll, the ID is read off the tag.

I was an UGS trainer from 2008-2011. We pushed the Silent Watch, Omni-Sense, Scorpion systems. The U.S. Army wasn't interested in using these systems because it required too much time to emplace them, they could couldn't be constantly relocated to "chase enemy activity", they required too much manpower to provide security for the emplacement team, nobody in the S-2 wanted to monitor the systems, and PED cell in Ft. Gordon wasn't able to provide much support either. On top of that, the systems were too expensive, and unreliable (i.e. Scorpion cameras were constantly breaking down, poor repair support, etc.). Out of 1200 systems in theatre (Iraq & Afghanistan combined, only 11 were ever emplaced. The U.S. Army gave up sensors when they closed the 96 Romeo ground surveillance MOS and committed to Unmanned Aircraft Systems instead.

I always like these claims of zero emission ...

While the actual using of the stored energy is zero emission, the recharging of it, usually isn't and often by a large amount.

It's similar to the use of Bio-Fuel where the user is claiming some form of carbon offsetting.

Unfortunately the production of it often damages the environment, and I got to witness that during my visit to Singapore.

The development of good IR sensors have been a huge problem for the last four decades.

There are so many uses of good IR imaging and yet there have been very few production improvements, which I find totally disappointing.

Granted, the materials needed are not readily available, but they are abundant enough to be affordable.

I think part of the problem has been the manufacturing limitations in working with anything beyond silicon wafers.

Hopefully the rapidly growing Graphene research will reach a level where it can support the development of simple IR sensors.
