As we saw with 9/11, diligence is needed to keep an eye on the bad guys.

If you do anything to become a person of interest, they you should not be surprised that your communications may be monitored.

We are way past 1984 from a surveillence perspective. The technology has just advanced too far to stop it. Plus everyone's embrace of wifi and the WWW actually made it much easier than anyone ever considered fifty years ago.
