In many ways, I think there would be much to gain by not making robots appear more human.

Think about it. Some people have a fear of the machines taking over, ala Terminator. Irrational and paranoid maybe, but can we be sure.

If robots can pass as human, then they become a tool for all kinds of actions not necessarily a benefit to humanity. Yes, they could make medical and education tasks better and more acceptable, but that action in itself causes problems. People taught by robots would not be exposed to human foiables. We all learned these basic issues growing up with other kids and human teachers. We learn that not all people are good and that teachers are indeed falable. These lessons are essential in our day to day interactions.

On the other side, if we make robots distinctly nonhuman, then we run the risk of people developing a contempt for all things robotic, which could lead to inappropriate actions taken against robots just because they are robots.

Interesting dilema, isn't it?

Meanwhile, I and I am sure others are watching the developments. There will be a time when these issues will become very important on how our societies accept and use robots.
