A few months ago I talked to a telemarketer for almost two minutes befor...</description><dc:language>en-US</dc:language><generator>Telligent Community 12</generator><item><title>RE: Bots Get More Anthropomorphic</title><link>https://community.element14.com/learn/publications/b/blog/posts/bots-get-more-anthropomorphic</link><pubDate>Tue, 16 Oct 2012 20:24:53 GMT</pubDate><guid isPermaLink="false">93d5dcb4-84c2-446f-b2cb-99731719e767:4e3814f0-2194-4782-8cf5-c23d6a30d852</guid><dc:creator>DAB</dc:creator><slash:comments>1</slash:comments><description>&lt;p&gt;In many ways, I think there would be much to gain by not making robots appear more human.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Think about it.&amp;nbsp; Some people have a fear of the machines taking over, ala Terminator.&amp;nbsp; Irrational and paranoid maybe, but can we be sure.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If robots can pass as human, then they become a tool for all kinds of actions not necessarily a benefit to humanity.&amp;nbsp; Yes, they could make medical and education tasks better and more acceptable, but that action in itself causes problems.&amp;nbsp; People taught by robots would not be exposed to human foiables.&amp;nbsp; We all learned these basic issues growing up with other kids and human teachers.&amp;nbsp; We learn that not all people are good and that teachers are indeed falable.&amp;nbsp; These lessons are essential in our day to day interactions.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On the other side, if we make robots distinctly nonhuman, then we run the risk of people developing a contempt for all things robotic, which could lead to inappropriate actions taken against robots just because they are robots.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Interesting dilema, isn&amp;#39;t it?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Meanwhile, I and I am sure others are watching the developments.&amp;nbsp; There will be a time when these issues will become very important on how our societies accept and use robots.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Just a thought,&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;DAB&lt;/p&gt;&lt;img src="https://community.element14.com/aggbug?PostID=15474&amp;AppID=45&amp;AppType=Weblog&amp;ContentType=0" width="1" height="1"&gt;</description></item></channel></rss>
