The aerospace industry used a virtual space to conduct simulator tests for proposed systems back in the 1980's. It worked very well as you had the ability to collect a lot of data, which could be put into real hardware for testing.

I also remember that the initail NASA STS designs started with a virtual mock up before they began prototyping the modules.

If you have not used one, they are very useful to provide user orientation and monitor usage statistics by observing how people work within the simulated environment. I suspect that all large facilities or systems are using this technology to pretest their layouts.

It looks like they are finally getting to a level where they can provide the service to most everyday organizations. If true, we should see much improvement on traffic flow and operational improvement in buildings and vehicles.
