The sensors market in the Asia-Pacific economies is likely to be driven by medical and process industries in 2009, a Frost & Sullivan analysis suggests.

Sriram Venkatasubramanian, Asia Pacific research analyst of measurement and instrumentation for the firm, said demand for advanced manufacturing has slumped as a result of the global economic crisis.

He commented: "Overall, the APAC sensors market is expected to have generated revenues of $7.3 billion (£4.5 billion) in the first half of 2009, down 8.5 per cent as compared with 11.9 per cent during the same period in 2008.

"The market is likely to generate revenues of $16.2 billion (£10 billion) in 2009 at a CAGR of 9.6 per cent over the previous year."

Mr Venkatasubramanian predicted that the MEMS sensor market will be driven by high growth in the consumer electronics sector, including handheld products such as mobile phones.

A report recently made available on Reportlinker has predicted that China's auto MEMS pressure sensor market scale could reach as high as 900 million units from 2011 to 2012.
