A new middleware platform developed by European researchers could revolutionise the way embedded sensors are used in cars and other vehicles.

The EMMA project, as it is known, hopes to take the difficulty out of developing new applications for existing embedded sensors by acting as an interface between designers and the electronics.

Antonio Marqués Moreno, coordinator of the EMMA project, commented: "We sought to hide the underlying complexity of in-car embedded sensors so that developers could quickly design new applications with existing electronics."

"EMMA will foster cost-efficient ambient intelligence systems with optimal performance, high reliability, reduced time-to-market and faster deployment."

The team is currently attempting to enhance road safety by communicating between the sensors within a car and street signs or other cars.

Another European-funded scheme, known as the Brighter project, recently set a series of world firsts for semiconductor lasers in the red, infrared and green spectra.
