A new silicone gel thought to have potential applications in optoelectronics and microelectronics has been developed by NuSil Technology.

LS-3140 is an optically clear encapsulating gel with a refractive index of 1.40 suitable for protecting electronics assemblies and components.

The gel is recommended for applications requiring a radiation-resistant, optically stable silicone to encapsulate sensitive photonics, LED assemblies and optical MEMs.

Due to its low modulus, LS-3140 handles stress during thermal cycling without any cracking or delineation, making it ideal for applications with an operating temperature range between -70 degrees and 200 degrees Celsius.

Brian Nash, vice president of marketing and sales at NuSil, said the product is the latest addition to the firm's line of silicone gels.

"NuSil understands that the growth rate of traditional and non-traditional lighting applications, as well as MEMS, are really challenging the material supplier to meet the long-term reliability and performance needed," he added.

LS-3140 is due to be unveiled at EuroLED 2009, which began on June 3rd at the Ricoh Arena in the West Midlands.
