A new white LED backlight driver that reduces backlight power dissipation by up to 50 per cent has been launched by Analog Devices.

The device automatically detects ambient light levels and adjusts the backlighting brightness according to particular conditions.

Analog Devices believe that the new product is particularly suited to portable navigation devices, radar scanners and consumer handsets that are used in a variety of ambient light environments but require consistent display.

The new lighting management system also minimises the processors involvement, which improves battery days-of-use time by up to 35 per cent.

Up to seven LEDs can be controlled by the single-chip ADP8860 device, which offers sophisticated dimming and fade-in/fade-out capabilities.

This means that designers can choose between either independent or grouped LED control depending on requirements.

LED backlight panel shipments are expected to reach 104.5 million units in 2009, according to research by Display Search.
