Red Robin goes eco-friendly with LEDs

A major US restaurant chain has decided to reduce its energy consumption and environmental impact by making the switch to LED lighting.

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers has replaced approximately 12,000 standard incandescent and halogen lights in more than 150 of its sites with energy-efficient seven-watt General Electric (GE) LED lights.

It is thought the switch will contribute towards Red Robin's drive to save several hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual lighting costs.

"Switching to LED lamps in our company-owned Red Robin restaurants offers immediate energy-cost advantages given the number of locations involved in our energy reduction efforts," commented John Rogers, Red Robin's president of capital purchasing.

The seven-watt GE lamps have an output of 200 lumens, cut energy consumption by up to 77 per cent and last more than six times longer than a standard bulb.

GE recently helped communications firm AT&T to switch to LED signage on more than 6,500 office buildings and retail locations across the US.
