Osram verifies LEDs' eco-credentials

The environmental credentials of LED lighting have been proven in a study by Osram Opto Semiconductors.

Examining the entire life cycle of an LED lamp – from the energy and raw materials used in production, to its use and eventual disposal – the research found that today's LED lamps achieve the life cycle assessment (LCA) values of compact fluorescent lamps and far surpass those of incandescent lamps.

The relevant material and energy supplies for LED production were determined in detail, including not only its components but also the environmental cost of the necessary transports and toxicity.

In terms of lifetime, the latest Parathom Classic A55 with Golden Dragon Plus LED was chosen for comparison and exhibited 25,000 hours of use – equivalent to 25 ordinary incandescent lamps.

Osram recently announced the release of its new TopLED Black series with lens, which is suitable for applications such as fuel price totem signs and public transport passenger information systems.
