LEDs set for London traffic lights

Green traffic lights are set to become a common feature of London's transport infrastructure in the future, following the announcement of new plans to install LED-powered lights in place of existing models.

Mayor Boris Johnson has announced that 3,500 energy-efficient LED traffic lights will replace existing stop signals across the capital, in a move that he claims will help cut energy consumption by traffic lights by as much as 60 per cent.

"Installing these eco-bulbs will cut the climate change emissions coming from London's galaxy of traffic lights by more than half, as well as save money from energy bills," he explained.

Furthermore, Mr Johnson said the London authorities are planning to roll out greater usage of LEDs for a wide range of lighting solutions in the capital in an effort to increase London's energy efficiency.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that outdoor lighting firm Schreder designed and constructed six LED lamps for use in the streets of the German town of Furth.
