UV LED technology 'gaining popularity'

A leading provider of LED indication products has reported an upturn in the adoption of its ultraviolet (UV) LEDs for applications that recently employed fluorescent UV lights.

Bivar, which launched its high-efficiency UV LED series in 2008, says it has seen a surge in interest from medical equipment manufacturers and other sectors such as counterfeit currency detection, fingerprint identification and leak detectors.

Michael Finn, vice-president of sales and marketing at Bivar, commented that companies from a broad range of industries are beginning to see the benefits of using LED technology.

"Our key differentiation is in our technology and our approach," he added.

"We work closely with our customers to understand their designs and provide a solution that brings the highest performing UV LED at a competitive price point."

Recently, California-based optoelectronics company Coherent released a new frequency-tripled, diode-pumped, solid-state UV laser designed for micromachining tasks such as scribing sapphire substrates.
