In a bid to make a marked improvement to the performance of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), a California-based company has introduced new silicon and ceramic carriers or submounts to its range of Integrated Passive Devices.

OnChip claims that LEDS are currently dominating several fields, such as LCD backlighting, car lighting, traffic lights, camera flashes and standard lighting.

It reports that the major advantage to the submounts is that they help LEDs to conserve energy, last longer and respond faster than their conventional counterparts, such as incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps.

The latest offerings serve as an interposer between the InGaN chip and the lead-frame of high-brightness LEDs, which helps to combat the two main design challenges of the bulbs: electro-static discharge sensitivity and package thermal coefficient of expansion issues.

Earlier this month, a study by CAP-XX indicated that LEDs provide more light energy than most xenon flashes suitable for five-megapixel slim camera phones and digital cameras.
!http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&itemid=19380733|alt=ADNFCR-1785-ID-19380733-ADNFCR|src=http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&itemid=19380733!
