The launch of Microsoft Windows 7 will result in "renewed interest" in upgrades, according to new research by Gartner.

A study by the organisation indicates that a move to the new operating system is "all but inevitable" for the majority of companies.

Michael Silver, vice-president and distinguished analyst at the company, stated that Windows 7 has a number of improvements that will allow users to have an enhanced experience when compared to its predecessor, Vista.

He also noted that this is the case with PCs that have similar or even slightly inferior specifications.

"The Windows 7 release will generate renewed interest in hardware upgrades in consumers and small businesses following its release," added Charles Smulders, managing vice-president at Gartner.

However, he concluded by stating that corporate demand for the operating system is not expected to gain speed until the end of next year.

In a recent post on the Windows Blog, it was noted that a number of Microsoft's hardware partners are launching a number of new PCs to work with Windows 7.
