LED bulbs 'expensive but effective'

New LED lightbulbs are increasingly finding their way into homes as experts look for alternatives to existing energy-efficient bulbs.

The BBC's flagship technology programme Click reports that at the moment, environmentally-friendly lights take a long time to heat up and reach their maximum brightness.

However, the new LED alternatives have diodes clustered inside the bulb and produce instantly bright light, which is also dimmable.

Although they are expensive, costing around £25 each, manufacturers claim that they are up to eight times more efficient than old incandescent products.

They can also last for up to 19 years, which is 40 times longer than common household lightbulbs, the news provider asserts.

In related news, the Japanese Times recently reported that there has been a huge surge in the number of LED bulbs sold in the country, with some manufacturers struggling to keep up with demand for the products.
