A new temperature sensor launched this week gives designers a "tremendous amount" of flexibility, according to Microchip Technology.

The US-based microcontroller and analogue semiconductor manufacturer's latest release is the high-accuracy, low-power MCP9804 Temperature Sensor.

Bryan Liddiard, the vice-president of marketing with the company's analogue and interface products division, suggested that the new product could inspire others in the industry to design more compact and economical temperature sensing systems with a higher performance.

"The MCP9804 temperature sensor represents a significant expansion of Microchip’s temperature sensor family," he added.

This latest addition to the range may be implemented in systems that require high accuracy, such as industrial freezers, consumer electronic devices - for example, personal computers - and automotive applications.

In related news, Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions recently announced that it has become a member of the LCD TV Association in order to inform people more easily about the importance of ambient light sensors for televisions.
