LED lightbulbs 'have many benefits'

The benefits of LED lightbulbs have been noted by one industry commentator.

Writing for StarTribune.com, columnist John Ewoldt explained that the products are free from mercury and can also tolerate cold weather conditions.

Furthermore, they turn on instantly, are cool to the touch and are flicker free, he continues.

The only drawback, in Mr Ewoldt's opinion, is that LED bulbs often have a cooler, blue tint to them which some people may not like. Depending on the manufacturer, this can also appear green or pink at times.

"Consumers looking for warm, amber hues similar to incandescents will have to test them," he adds.

Despite this, Mr Ewoldt thinks that the energy saving properties of LEDs and the fact that they last for such a long time outweigh the negative aspects.

Last week, Cree announced that it is launching a new product capable of producing 969 lumens at 102 lumens per watt, which it claimed is the highest illumination output in the industry.
