One of the biggest problems facing the optoelectronics industry is creating a system that performs optical sensing, imaging and other complex tasks.

This is according to SPIE, which notes that although optoelectonic devices can create small features, they are restricted to planar geometries and limited coverage areas.

As a result, there has been an increase in the level of attention being given to large area and flexible assemblies of optoelectronics devices with nanoscale features.

The news provider suggests polymer fibres with perform-based, fibre drawing techniques as an alternative.

Their simple, low-cost fabrication yields "extended lengths of highly uniform fibres with well-controlled geometries and structures that can be woven onto arbitrary large 2D and 3D constructs and fabrics", the news provider notes.

At the end of last month, newelectronics suggested that optoelectronics should be focused on the lighting sector and how the technology could benefit the industry.

The news provider claimed that LED bulbs can present many new opportunities for lighting.
