Starbucks to replace bulbs with LEDs

Starbucks has announced that it will be replacing the existing lightbulbs in 8,000 of its cafes with LED alternatives by March next year.

It is thought that the change will reduce each store's energy consumption by seven per cent and the company hopes to lower its power usage by 25 per cent by the end of 2010.

The LEDs will replace traditional incandescent and other vacuum-and-chemical lights and they also have the potential to reduce air conditioning bills as they do not generate heat.

Provided by General Electric, the new lights have been adjusted to meet Starbucks' special design and aesthetic specifications.

Around 1,000 outlets in the US have already been fitted with the LED bulbs.

Starbucks was first established in 1971 in Seattle's historic Pike Place Market and took it's name from Herman Melville's famous novel Moby ***.

It has now become a worldwide franchise and has more than 15,000 outlets across the globe.
