Utilities firm 'gives away LED lights'

One utilities provider has encouraged people to use energy-efficient LED bulbs on their Christmas trees by launching a new exchange programme.

San Diego Gas & Electric offered those gathering outside Coronado City Hall the opportunity to swap their old incandescent lights for low-power LED alternatives.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, this event was part of a growing "national movement" that is seeing more and more people turn to more efficient sources of light.

This could reduce their power bills and relieve some of the pressure currently being placed on power grids, the news provider explains.

Michael Meacham, conservation director at Chula Vista, said that LEDs have "a lot of advantages".

"As the product becomes more and more reliable and applicable to different uses, it will be more widely adopted," he added.

In other LED news, Dialight recently announced that it has signed a new contract that will see its LED white strobe technology used by an unnamed US telecom tower operator.
