Increasing demand for the use of semiconductors in mobile phones and personal computers means that there is likely to be a strong market recovery next year.

This is according to chip industry association WSTS, which predicts that sales could increase by 12.2 per cent to $246.9 billion (£147.7 billion) in 2010.

If this forecast proves to be correct, it will beat June's expectations of a 7.3 per cent growth in the market.

California-based company WSTS is expecting semiconductor revenue to fall to $220.1 billion this year, which represents a decline of 11.5 per cent, the China Post reports.

These thoughts are echoed by SIA, which estimates that market sales will rebound by 10.2 per cent in 2009, despite this year's fall.

Gartner also announced its predictions for the semiconductor industry recently.

The research firm claimed that although current expectations for 2009 semiconductor sales are lower than last year's, they are still better than predictions made in the third quarter of 2009.
