Gartner says PC market value reduced by lower ASPs

New research by Gartner has suggested that falling average selling prices (ASPs) of PCs in 2009 led to a drop in market value for shipments, but also concluded that the sector will pick up again next year.

According to the company, the global PC shipment market is estimated to be worth $217 billion (£131 billion) in 2009, which is 10.7 per cent less than the previous year.

George Shiffler, research director at Gartner, described the fall in ASPs as "unprecedented" and suggested that this was the reason for the decrease in value.

He explained: "The rapid decline in PC ASPs reflects a marked shift towards lower price points as customers have looked for 'good enough' PCs at the cheapest price."

In his view, the fourth quarter of this year will see modest growth in PC shipments, with the market value expected to reach $222.9 billion in 2010.

Last week, Gartner reported that the combined printer, copier and multifunctional product market in India reached almost 0.6 million units in the third quarter of the year.
