Cree has announced the release of a product which it claims is the brightest lighting--class LED on the market.

The company reported that the XLamp XP-G LED is now commercially available and could reduce the number of bulbs that a firm requires to light up an area.

Cree suggested that this could lead to financial savings, particularly since it claims that the LED has a high efficacy at a low current, which can reduce the amount of batteries or solar cells needed to operate them.

It explained that the product can produce 132 lumens per Watt (lm/W) at 350 mA, which can lower the power requirement for applications.

The firm, which recently won the top prize in the 2009 Lighting for Tomorrow - Solid State Lighting competition, also stated that the LED is the brightest in the industry, producing 367 lumens when powered by 1 A.

Due to producing efficacy of 111 lm/W, the bulb also creates a footprint that it 80 per cent smaller than the company's XR-E LED, while at the same time being 46 per cent brighter.
