LEDs 'used in new skin therapy'

A new product called Lumie Clear is being launched in December which uses LEDs to treat skin conditions.

According to Lumie, by emitting blue light at 415 nm, bacteria is killed and by shining a red light at 660 nm, tissue growth is stimulated and inflammation is eased.

Jonathan Cridland, chief executive officer of the firm, claimed that light therapy is well-established in the medical sector and highlighted its use in treating seasonal affective disorder.

He explained that this kind of treatment was previously only available at dermatologists, but this new product allows people to perform the technique at home.

Mr Cridland said: "Light therapy can be used in other areas to regulate sleep patterns, boost energy and provide pain free treatments to skin conditions, like acne."

Acne vulgaris is a condition which affects about 80 per cent of adolescents and affects skin on the face and neck, which can lead to scarring in some situations, reports Reuters.
