Global semiconductor sales have exceeded expectations for October and risen by 5.1 per cent compared to September.

Sales of the chips reached $21.7 billion (£13.2 billion) for the month, which is more than had been predicted by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics, although it is down 3.5 per cent compared to October of last year.

George Scalise, president of Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), claimed that the sales figures reflect the improving market conditions across the world.

He explained: "October is historically a strong month for the semiconductor industry as electronic equipment manufacturers ramp up production for the holiday season."

SIA stated that the global economic crisis is considered to be the biggest factor to affect sales of the electronic chips, with a 16.6 per cent year-on-year drop in transactions recorded for the first ten months of 2009.

In related news, it has been announced that Advantest will sponsor the Global Semiconductor Association Awards dinner in California on December 10th.
