Touchscreen popularity 'to boost semiconductor sector'

A new report by Frost & Sullivan has indicated that the growing popularity of touchscreens could provide semiconductor manufacturers with an opportunity for increased sales.

The study revealed that 377 million touchscreen IC units were shipped in 2008, which the firm predicted could rise to 794 million by 2012.

Jayalakshmi Janakiraman, a research analyst at Frost & Sullivan, noted that the input of manufacturers could have an impact on how much this growth extends to.

She claimed that if touchscreens could be made more responsive at a semiconductor level, then the item could be adopted by other devices.

Ms Janakiraman suggested that tailoring their solutions to meet clients' needs could benefit them in terms of sales.

"Touchscreen IC manufacturers are providing turnkey solutions to customers to enable easy integration into their display systems," she commented.

Last week, market research company Gartner predicted that the global semiconductor market could be driven by technology upgrades in the first half of 2010.
