Gartner has advised vendors of semiconductors to track the spending patterns of its customers in 2010, to ensure that they are aware of the level of demand in the industry.

Stephen Ohr, semiconductor research director at the firm, made his comments following the publication of a report by Gartner, which indicated that there was an 11.4 per cent drop in global revenue in the sector from 2008 to 2009.

He explained that this year has been one of the most difficult on record for the industry and vendors must make sure that they keep on top of demand in 2010.

Mr Ohr advised looking out for any disruption in demand and orders that stretch capacity, since he claimed that neither the recession nor its recovery was "felt equally".

"The PC segment was the first to spring back, followed later in the year by other segments reflecting consumer sentiment, like cell phones and automobiles," he said.

This week, Gartner estimated that the market for electronic-discovery software has grown by 25 per cent in terms of global revenue in 2009.
