LG has used LED backlighting technology to develop a new 2.6 mm HDTV.

The 'extreme slim' television weighs just four kg and takes up a minimal amount of room when displayed on its stand.

According to Unbeatable, LEDs have become a popular technology among TV manufacturers as they produce high-quality images while still enabling a slim shape to be obtained.

The news provider reports that the 42-inch television from LG also includes a separate tuner box that is connected to the product via a single HDMI cable.

This makes it easier for users to connect games consoles and Blu-ray players, as there is improved access to the TV's ports and connections.

In related news, market research firm Displaybank recently forecast that the market for LED LCD TVs could grow to 26 million units in 2010. This is up from 2009's 3.1 million unit shipment figure.
