Global beverage company Coca-Cola has made an iconic sign in San Francisco more environmentally-friendly by installing LEDs.

The company has had a sign along the southbound lanes on the Bay Bridge for more than 70 years and it has become iconic among residents, according to Bea Perez, senior vice-president of integrated marketing at Coca-Cola North America.

By converting to LED lighting, the sign will use 80 per cent less power and the firm has offset the remaining energy by purchasing wind Renewable Energy Certificates.

Ms Perez explained: "The new sign reaffirms our commitment to maintain a positive presence in the community by championing energy management and sustainability initiatives."

Coca-Cola worked alongside Steling Planet on the project, a provider of carbon offsets and renewable energy in the US.

This week, a new LED product by Klipsch was unveiled, which gives out low-energy LED lighting as well as playing music when it is screwed into a conventional light bulb socket.
