Touchscreen modules 'poised for growth'

A market research firm has predicted that sales of touchscreen modules could see huge growth over the next four years.

Sanju Khatri, principle analyst for signage and projection at iSuppli, described how certain products used in education and conference room situations are becoming increasingly popular.

He explained that having touch capability in such scenarios "opens up another dimension" and allows people to provide relevant information in a teaching environment.

According to iSuppli, global shipments of touchscreen modules could reach 5.4 million units by 2013, despite selling fewer than one million in 2009.

It credited the beginning of interest in such technology to the introduction of smartphones, but predicted that growth in digital signage and displays could boost global sales further.

Mr Khatri said: "They also allow teachers to create easily and rapidly customised learning objects from a range of existing content and to adapt it to the needs of the class in real time."

At a recent industry event, a projector made by Light Blue Optic was exhibited which turns any flat surface into a touchscreen.
