Mitsubishi Electric unveils new red laser diode

A new red laser diode (LD) has been developed by the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation which can be used in portable display systems such as pico projectors.

The ML520G72, which will begin shipping on February 1st, offers the highest output of any 638 nm-band LD, reaching 500 mW (CW) and 600 mW (pulsed).

Mitsubishi Electric notes that the 32 per cent conversion ratio at 500 mW is an industry-leading figure, while the use of LDs rather than LEDs has the potential to offer higher output power using less energy.

When used in pico projectors, the power consumption of the product is reduced as a result of the item's 25 degrees C case temperature, with the LD able to be used in environments of between -5 degrees C and 40 degrees C.

Another new diode to be released recently is Vishay Intertechnology's bidirectional, symmetrical, single-line ESD protection item, which offers high isolation and a low leakage current of less than 0.1 microamp.
