Audi A8 'integrates more LEDs into lighting system'

The lighting system of the new Audi A8 will feature more LEDs than current models in production by the car manufacturer, it has been announced.

Osram Opto Semiconductors revealed that all of the major headlight functions are set to use the company's Ostar bulbs, including motorway beams, cornering lights and all-weather lights.

Previous Audi models have had LED devices installed in the headlamps for daytime running lighting, but this has now been taken further to include other uses.

Peter Knittl, LED automotive director at Osram, claimed that such bulbs are perfectly suited for modern automobile lighting.

He said: "LEDs have left the niche market of limited edition and luxury vehicles and have arrived successfully in volume production."

The company stated that this form of lighting can offer long operating life, a warmer colour temperature and improved visual contrast.

This week, Plastics News revealed that General Motors and Hyundai have both included the use of OLED technology for instrument display panels in concept designs.
