Computer memory manufacturer Micron Technology has become the latest electronic device producer to announce that it is investing in research regarding LEDs and solar panels.

Writing for Green Tech Media, Michael Kanellos pointed out that other businesses in the semiconductor industry such as Toshiba, Applied and Samsung have previously shown an interest in environmentally-friendly devices.

He noted that Samsung has stated that it wants to become the biggest solar manufacturer in the world by 2015 - with some experts suggesting there is overlap between the LCD technology it uses in its televisions and solar chips.

Mr Kanellos suggested that the move by Micron may be trickier since it typically produces DRAM and flash memory which are made from silicon, unlike LEDs.

He wrote: "Still, memory is a huge volume business where keeping costs low remains paramount, so Micron's factory management acumen should apply directly to any solar or LED effort."

Last month, the company revealed that it will voluntarily switch its stock listing from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq Global Select Market.
