Semiconductor industry 'to receive iPad boost'

A market research firm has suggested that the launch of Apple's iPad could prove to be an opportunity for sales growth in the semiconductor sector.

In-Stat claimed the potential popularity of the tablet computer could mean that there is scope for $4.1 billion (£2.6 billion) of expansion for the industry.

Analyst at the company Jim McGregor suggested that a key feature of tablet PCs is that they are complementary to other portable gadgets, such as smartphones and netbooks.

The firm suggested that manufacturers of batteries and displays could stand to do well out of the emergence of this form of electronic device.

"Tablets have quickly become a high priority for competitors across the value chain, including mobile operators," he added.

In another report by the same company, it was pointed out that the tablet is entering a "crowded market".

Apple revealed that its iPad will be capable of offering users access to internet, video, iTunes, maps, iBooks and various other functions.
