Gartner makes positive predictions for semiconductor industry

Gartner has released its predictions for the semiconductor industry in 2010, offering a positive forecast for the sector.

The organisation expects semiconductor revenue to reach $276 billion (£180 billion) this year, which represents a 19.9 per cent increase on 2009 figures of $231 billion.

According to the firm, there is "clear evidence" that strong growth is on the cards for the industry.

Bryan Lewis, research vice president at Gartner, said: "While the semiconductor market declined 9.6 per cent in 2009, sequential quarterly revenue growth was amazingly strong through the last three quarters of 2009."

He explained that the positive gains in PC unit production  which is expected to increase by up to 20 per cent in 2010 - have reflected positively on other markets.

Mr Lewis stressed that the only concern now is whether this recovery will continue at its current rate.

In related news, Gartner recently stated that global mobile phone sales to end users grew by eight per cent in the final quarter of 2009.
