The global economic downturn has played havoc with many firms' supplies of semiconductors, it has been claimed.

According to the Korea IT Times, the quick recovery of the market following the downturn meant that many companies were suddenly faced with short supplies of semiconductors and LCD panels.

This is because the manufacturers are struggling to ensure that supply meets demand, the news provider explained.

Commenting on the news that some businesses only have a week's worth of memory semiconductors left in stock, an official working within the industry told the publication: "Such short supply has pushed buyers into making personal visits to semiconductor suppliers like us to make sure that they are at the top of the waiting lists."

The spokesperson noted that the current situation is the complete opposite of the challenges that were facing the industry last year.

In related news, iSuppli recently claimed that there could be a global shortage of semiconductors by the end of 2010.
