Touchscreen mobile devices are likely to continue growing in popularity over the next few years.

This is the prediction from Gartner, which forecast that the products will account for 58 per cent of global mobile device sales by 2013.

In this year alone, it is thought that sales will surpass 362.7 million units, which represents an increase of 96.8 per cent when compared to 2009 figures of 184.3 million units.

Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, explained that touchscreens are becoming increasingly commonplace and are "no longer the preserve of high-end devices".

"As phone capabilities increase, consumers are becoming much more aware of the benefits of touch interfaces and vendors are responding," she added.

This means that there are far more affordable options available to consumers who want a touchscreen phone.

In related news, the firm also revealed that the combined printer, copier and multifunctional product declined by 17.8 per cent in 2009, when compared to figures from the previous year.
